Dental Hygiene & Teeth Cleanings

Your Top Choice for Dental Exams & Teeth Cleanings!

Dental Town offers dental exams & teeth cleanings. Oral hygiene is necessary for eliminating bacteria in the mouth, which can build up to form plaque that can harden and lead to long-term ailments such as gingivitis (a mild form of gum disease) and periodontal disease if it is not removed. Along with your regular oral home care and maintenance, we recommend regular professional cleanings, fluoride application, and General checkups to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy. While home maintenance and cleaning like brushing and flossing is important to your overall oral health, it focuses only on the areas above the gum line. A professional cleaning is able to clean your teeth not only above the gum line, but below the gum line as well. It is only through cleaning above AND below the gum line that we can help prevent inflammation, infection, decay and tooth loss, and keep your teeth and gums healthy from top to bottom!

How Often Should I get a Regular Teeth Cleanings & Dental Checkup?

At Dental Town, we recommend that on top of brushing and flossing twice daily at home, patients get a complete dental exam and teeth cleaning every six months, though once a year at a minimum. We recommend getting teeth cleaning performed twice annually as a preventative measure, but every 3-4 months for periodontitis sufferers or those with certain chronic conditions. It is important to keep in mind however, that each person is different, and you should consult with our team to decide how often you should be examined. We may suggest that you visit more frequently based on factors such as smoking, frequency of cavities, and genetic susceptibility to tooth and root decay as well as gum disease.

It should be noted that gum disease cannot be completely reversed, but regular teeth cleanings are the best way to effectively halt progression.

Why get a dental exam?

Dental exams and teeth cleanings give us the opportunity to evaluate your current methods of dental care, provide suggestions for future care in order to protect you from complications such as cavities and gum disease, and keep your teeth healthy and clean from top to bottom! These exams also allow us to detect problems early so they can be fixed quickly and easily.

What Can I expect from a Dental Exam?

During your visit we will first provide a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, looking at your overall oral health, and follow it up with a cleaning of your teeth and gums to prevent the progression of gingivitis.

An x-ray may be performed to provide a more detailed summary of your oral health and to more closely identify any problems. We will provide a visual and radiological examination extra orally, as well as inside of the mouth, so we can diagnose any dental or oral disease and come up with a specific and tailored treatment plan just for you. Included in this exam will be a comprehensive assessment of your gum tissue, checking for gum recession, the presence of gingivitis, and possible gum disease. We will also examine the head, neck and jaw areas for any abnormalities, including an oral cancer screening to assess the gum tissues, tongue, and lips for signs of oral cancer. We will ask you questions about your current methods of dental care, such as how often you brush your teeth and floss, as well as whether you use a toothpaste with fluoride. With this information in mind, we will demonstrate proper dental care and provide suggestions on how to improve your habits to promote optimal oral health.

Following your exam, our team will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, removing any surface stains or deposits, called tartar or calculus, that are more difficult to remove than plaque and require the assistance of professional dental instruments. Cleanings are an important dental treatment for stopping the progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease. We will also check for signs of decay and gum disease.

Benefits of Regular Professional Teeth Cleanings

Professional Teeth Cleanings are an effective procedure in keeping the oral cavity in proper health and halting the progression of gum disease. The benefits of regular professional teeth cleanings include:

  • Plaque removal. Tartar (also referred to as calculus) and plaque buildup, both above and below the gum line, can result in serious periodontal problems. Unfortunately, even with a proper home brushing and flossing routine, it can be impossible to remove all debris, bacteria, and deposits from gum pockets. The experienced eye of a dentist or hygienist using specialized dental equipment is necessary to catch potentially damaging buildup.
  • A healthier looking smile. Stained and yellowed teeth can dramatically decrease the esthetics of a smile. A professional teeth cleaning is an effective treatment in ridding the teeth of these unsightly stains.
  • Fresher breath. Bad breath (or halitosis) is generally indicative of advancing periodontal disease. A combination of rotting food particles (possibly below the gum line) and potential gangrene stemming from gum infection, results in bad breath. The regular professional removal of plaque, calculus, and bacteria can noticeably improve halitosis and reduce infection.
  • Saving money by preventing long-term damage to your teeth that might require intervention down the road.
